Bio
The lively abstract expressionist works by Susan Sales are associated with vivid color-fields and signature deep glossy surfaces, inviting the viewer into a meditative personal space. Sales describes the process that brought her art the greatest recognition as a technique that gives her painting an extraordinary surface, similar to that of Chinese lacquer; accomplished by sanding countless layers of paint into a smooth surface and sheen. With a passion for the organic manipulation of materials and media, Sales infuses time and mystery percolating through these multiple layers.
Sales’ early work was in Los Angeles in the 1980s, producing a variety of hand-painted textiles and then she moved on to fine arts. In the early 90s, Sales firmly established her career in the booming art scene in Santa Fe, New Mexico where she spent 12 creatively industrious years, while exhibiting with galleries in Santa Fe, Dallas, TX, Redwood City, CA, Birmingham, MI, Tulsa, OK, Telluride, CO and Palm Desert, CA.
Sales moved to Dallas, Texas in 2004, continuing to show at galleries in Dallas, Santa Fe, and Tulsa. In 2017 she took a year off to travel the U. S. and spend time with family. Returning to Dallas in 2018, and after a great deal of soul-searching she elected to take a break from the gallery circuit. Currently living in western Colorado, she has returned to the studio, and as she puts it, "Time will tell if the art-gods wish me to continue making paintings."
Sales’ works have adorned the covers of numerous magazines including House Beautiful, Elle DECOR and the Neiman Marcus Christmas Book.
