COLORFIELD
Colorfield painting is a style of abstract painting that emerged in New York City during the 1940's and 1950's. It is characterized primarily by large fields of solid color spread across the canvas. There is less emphasis on gesture, brushstrokes and action in favor of an overall consistency of form and process. While Sales has clearly been influenced by pioneers of this movement, she insists that 'character' must be built into the composition. While her colorfield works may seem a single color at first glance, there is a complexity beneath that imbues the work with a depth otherwise not obtained. |
